Role Description:

We are currently looking to hire a full-time or part-time Computational Biologist that has experience working with microarray and next generation sequencing data for population genetics. As a Basepaws Computational Biologist, you have the ability to become a leader in the field of cat genetics and pioneer an underfunded research area.

At Basepaws there is substantial flexibility to pursue your own research interests provided that necessary responsibilities are completed. There are numerous avenues for advancement and flexibility. You will interact with marketing and executive teams to guide the company and make significant contributions to the company as a whole. You will also have an opportunity to interact with pet owners to understand what they desire out of a genetic test. We have a strong preference toward individuals that are creative and curious about what is currently an understudied field.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Masters, Ph.D., D.V.M., or M.D. degree in a relevant field (e.g. Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science), or equivalent practical experience.
  • Fluency in at least one of the following programming (C++, Java, C#) and scripting languages (Python, node.js, bash).
  • Capable of conducting computational biology outside of R.
  • Hands-on experience working with various public and proprietary data repositories (e.g. TCGA).
  • Understanding of bioinformatics pipelines for processing and interpreting sequencing data.
  • Strong scientific understanding of molecular biology and genetics.
  • Excellent teamwork, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to recognize, report, and resolve mistakes in analysis and developed algorithms.
  • Strong desire to impact the health of cats.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience working in a computational biology or genomics laboratory.
  • Experience in GWAS, eQTL, imputation, and population genetics analysis algorithms.
  • Experience in integrative omics analysis, data mining, pathway analysis, statistics is desirable.
  • Working experience with R.
  • Proficient working in a Unix/Linux environment.
  • Desire to work in a startup environment
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement algorithms and methods, especially in collaborative software and data analysis development environments (i.e. source control, code and analysis reviews, API use and definition).

Role Description:

We are currently looking to hire a Data Infrastructure Engineer. You will work on building out a data infrastructure on AWS for storage and analysis of large and complex datasets which includes genomics data. You and the team will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of the companies new data platform and will focus on infrastructure, design, architecting, building, iterating and optimizing the data environment. You will work closely with bioinformaticians to implement this infrastructure. Genomics knowledge is not necessary, but nice to have. Excellent team and compensation package.

How you will have an impact:

Your work will contribute meaningfully to core systems, from design –> implementation and you will help solve complex technical problems across all services and at all levels.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop pipelines for continuous integration/deployment of data infrastructure and full-stack applications on AWS.

  • Experience with HPC environments via cfncluster or parallel cluster

About You

You know SEO inside and out. You’re an expert who could teach classes on how to do SEO right with respect to content optimization, technical SEO, and link building. You are able to work independently, seeking optimization opportunities on your own, but still coordinate with the content management and web development teams. You make any organization better for being on their team. You operate with a high degree of structure and skill. You’re fairly analytical and have a strong drive to master and complete any and all assignments. You have a temperament that allows you to work with routine or repetitive tasks and like that many functions are predictable, systematic, and scheduled. But since e-commerce stores can be a people business too, you’re also socially approachable and somewhat outgoing. In short, you get things done and play well with others.

  • Optimizing existing content to improve rankings in the search engines
  • Provide content recommendations to improve search traffic and user engagement, using site, search, and organic keyword data to identify new areas of opportunity in alignment with editorial and business objectives
